Trans Day of Visibility & Me by Leo Ellis Collins (he/him)
Mar 31, 2024Why Transgender Day of Visibility is important:
TDoV is crucial for raising awareness, celebrating diversity, and advocating for the rights and well-being of Trans+ people worldwide.
This day highlights the challenges and discrimination we face in the Trans+ community, while also celebrating our resilience, strength, and contributions to society.
Today we encourage people to stand in solidarity with Trans+ folk, affirm our identities, advocating for our rights to live authentically and free from discrimination.
What TDoV means to me:
I think Trans Day of Visibility is vital, as it’s an opportunity to celebrate our lives in a world which is often hostile.
It’s about showing that despite the discrimination and lack of understanding that exists, we’re here and we’re living our lives.
Within the Trans+ community, it can be hugely encouraging to see other people’s journeys.
Sharing experiences can mean that people feel less alone and provide hope for those who may be struggling.
Our visibility can also educate and help others to see that Tran+ folk exist, living ordinary lives and still unfortunately fighting for our rights and understanding.
How wellness professionals can support Trans+ folk:
1/ Pronouns: The exchange of pronouns when first meeting a client should be an automatic part of your introduction. As wellness professionals this goes a long way toward helping somebody be seen and feel valued.
2/ Don’t generalise: Just because you have worked with one or two Trans+ folk, does not make you an expert on our needs and struggles. Everyone is individual and should be treated accordingly.
3/ Our history is ours: If a Trans+ person discloses their identity to you, it doesn’t mean that you have freedom to ask questions about their past or even plans for the future in relation to their identity.
This may feel more tricky for you, if you identify as a member of the community too, however, it’s important to continue to respect people’s privacy.
